T-Shirts With Funny Sayings.

The joke is the outfit. Here's how to wear one without turning into a walking novelty mug.

A t-shirt with a funny saying does one job better than any other piece of clothing: it tells people something about you before you open your mouth. That's the upside and the risk. A good one reads like a line you'd actually say. A bad one reads like it came free with a tank of gas.

The difference is rarely the joke alone. It's the type, the placement, the blank it's printed on and what you wear with it. A dry one-liner in brush lettering on a washed black boxy tee looks like a design choice. The same words in clip-art font on a stiff white promo shirt look like a dare.

Below: five ways to wear funny saying tees, what makes a saying work on fabric, and the mistakes that turn a good joke into a costume. The examples are our own Professional Idiot designs, because we've made most of these mistakes so you don't have to.

Five Ways to Wear a Funny Saying Tee

01

Oversized Back Print with Wide-Leg Denim

Put the joke on the back and keep the front nearly blank, like our Vicariously tee: a small monogram up front, the line across the shoulders. Wear it with relaxed wide-leg jeans and chunky sneakers. People read it as you walk away, which is the most confident delivery a joke can get.

02

Front Print Tee Under an Open Overshirt

A big front graphic like the German Shepherd tee can be a lot on its own. Throw an open flannel or chore jacket over it so the saying shows in a vertical strip. You get the punchline without the full billboard, and it works at dinners where a bare graphic tee would feel underdressed.

03

Washed Black Tee with Black Cargos

Go tonal. Washed black tee, black or charcoal cargos, black boots or sneakers. When everything else is quiet, the white lettering is the only thing in the outfit with a voice, and that's exactly where you want the attention.

04

Slogan Tee with Tailored Trousers

The contrast move. A funny tee loosely tucked into pleated trousers, with loafers or clean leather sneakers, says you take the clothes seriously and yourself less so. This is the one for creative offices and gallery openings.

05

Boxy Tee, Shorts and a Cap

Summer default. A boxy saying tee, mid-length shorts, crew socks and a plain cap. Keep the cap and shorts unbranded so the shirt is the only text in the frame. Two jokes in one outfit cancel each other out.

What Makes a Funny Saying Work on a Shirt

Short wins. If someone needs more than three seconds to read it, they'll stop halfway and you'll be standing there while they finish. Most of the best shirt lines are under eight words.

Specific beats generic. "I need coffee" has been printed on a million mugs. "I taught my German Shepherd to bark in French" is strange enough that people stop and ask about it, and that question is the whole point of wearing one.

It should sound like you. Self-deprecating and absurd lines age well because they don't punch at anyone. Lines that insult your boss, your spouse or an entire group of people get old after one wear and awkward after two.

Type and Print Matter More Than the Joke

Hand-lettered and brush-script type makes a saying feel like something a person wrote, not something a template generated. Big, high-contrast prints (white ink on black, black ink on bone) read from across a room. Small, thin, low-contrast text just makes people squint at your chest, which nobody enjoys.

Placement changes the tone. A front print is a conversation starter. A back print is a parting shot. A tiny chest print is an inside joke for people standing close.

Fit: Pick the Blank First

An oversized or boxy fit with dropped shoulders makes a saying tee read as streetwear. A tight, thin, standard-cut tee makes the same print read as a gift-shop shirt. If you only change one thing, change the blank.

A fabric with some weight holds its shape, so a large print stays flat and legible instead of wrinkling through the punchline. Our size guide shows how the oversized and classic fits compare.

What Breaks the Look

Two sayings in one outfit (shirt plus hat plus tote). Faded, cracked prints that make the line unreadable. A joke tee under a suit jacket that's trying very hard. Lettering so small it looks like a care label. And any shirt that explains its own joke underneath the joke.

FAQ

Are funny t-shirts still in style?

Yes. Slogan and text tees are a staple of current streetwear. What changed is the execution: oversized fits, washed fabrics and hand-drawn type replaced the stiff novelty shirts of the 2000s.

What makes a good funny t-shirt saying?

Short, specific and a little absurd. It should be readable in a couple of seconds, sound like something a real person would say, and not need to insult someone to be funny.

Can you wear a funny t-shirt to work?

In casual or creative workplaces, a clean saying tee under an overshirt or with tailored trousers usually works. Skip anything crude, political or aimed at coworkers. A back print with a plain front is the safe bet.

Should the saying be on the front or the back?

Front prints invite conversation. Back prints feel more like streetwear and are easier to dress up because the front stays clean. If you wear a jacket most of the time, pick a front print so the line still shows.

What fit is best for a funny saying tee?

Oversized or boxy fits make text tees look current. Choose a fabric with some weight so a large print stays flat and readable.

How do I keep the print from cracking?

Wash inside out in cold water and hang dry or tumble dry on low. Never iron directly on the print.
